The 38th Annual Mathematics Symposium will run from 8:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Frostburg State University on Saturday, May 1, 2010. We are excited to announce that our featured speaker will be Brian Hayes, Senior Writer for American Scientist. Since 1993 he has been writing the “Computing Science” column for the magazine. Earlier, he wrote similar columns for Scientific American, for Computer Language and for The Sciences. From 1972 to 1984 he was an editor of Scientific American; from 1990 to 1992 he was the editor of American Scientist. A complete schedule of events and registration forms will be available early in 2010. At this time we are seeking presenters to address the teaching, learning, and exploring of mathematics at various levels of mathematics instruction (K-14). We welcome presentations that focus on such areas as mathematics content, teaching methodologies and/or technologies, connections between mathematics and other subjects, and curriculum innovations within mathematics education. If you have any suggestions for topics and/or recommendations of speakers (including yourself) for the program, please submit the linked form before November 20. We sincerely hope that you will take a moment now to reserve Saturday, May 1, 2010, and that you will come to Frostburg to spend the day with your friends and colleagues from the tri-state area and beyond, sharing many new and exciting ideas in mathematics education at the Symposium. If you haven’t attended a previous Symposium, here is a copy of the program for 2008 (there was no symposium in 2009 due to the NCTM Annual Meeting being held in Washington, DC).
