Mass Communication Advising Center

The Department of Mass Communication recognizes the challenges facing students regarding the advising process and we're here to help. Below, you will find information designed to assist you as you move through your academic career here in the Department of Mass Communication. Again, we are here to help, but remember...

"You, the student, are responsible for planning your academic program and for meeting the requirements of the University and of departments."

"You must obtain, retain, and consult regularly the sections of the applicable catalog that govern your graduation requirements."

"The academic regulations and procedures described in [the Undergraduate Catalog] may change during the period of your enrollment, and it is your responsibility to be aware of, and follow the academic regulations and procedures currently in effect."

--pp. 40, 2005-2007 Undergraduate Catalog

You can find current and previous undergraduate catalogs HERE.

The single best way to accurately track your academic progress is by regularly examining your "degree progress report" available on PAWS.

Your degree progress report will tell you what you have taken, what you are taking, and what you still need to take. It will tell you how many hours you have earned and need to earn before graduating. The trick is learning how to read the report. As a basic rule, areas of RED are cause for concern. The red areas show deficiencies. Many students find it helpful to print out and complete the appropriate checklists (below). Doing this will help you determine what GEP and MCOM major requirements you have satisfied and need to satisfy. Being familiar with the basic requirements for graduation will also help. These basic requirements are...

1) You must successfully complete (with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher) at least 120 hours of academic coursework (DVMT classes do not count).

2) Of the 120 hours you need to complete, at least 39 of these hours must come from 300 and/or 400 level courses.

3) Of the 120 hours you need to complete, at least 15 of these hours must come from outside the major department's class offerings.

4) In the Mass Communication major, you must earn a C or better in all required courses.
