Audition & Admission

Music Major Entrance Requirements: Audition
In addition to being officially accepted by the university, entering freshmen and transfer students are required to pass an audition in their chosen performing area before being accepted to the Department of Music. Instrumentalists will be asked to perform two works differing in style and tempo. It is preferred, but not required, that vocalists prepare selections in two different languages. All students are expected to be able to vocally match a single pitch and a short series of pitches.

A brief Music Theory placement exam will be administered prior to the audition.

Should it prove impossible for a student to attend the audition with his/her own accompanist, that student is advised to send the music at least three weeks in advance of the scheduled audition to Dr.Karen Soderberg, (contact information below), who will make appropriate arrangements with the staff accompanist.

Based on proficiency, students may be granted conditional status while pursuing their music major curriculum and may be given full music major standing at a later date.

Music Scholarship Auditions 2008
While regular auditions may be scheduled throughout the spring, the Department of Music will consider students for music scholarships only on the following date:

  • Thursday, February 28, 2008 
    (Thursday, March 6, snow date).
While we realize that this will necessitate a student's absence from high school that day, FSU schedules scholarship auditions mid-week in order that applicants have the opportunity to attend ensemble rehearsals, music theory, aural skills, and music history classes and interact with faculty and current music majors.
