Ellen Grolman, founder and cellist of the Chamberlain Trio, joined the music faculty of Frostburg State University in 1983. Prior to relocating to Maryland, she held a faculty appointment at the Eilat Conservatory of Music in Israel. Dr. Grolman holds degrees in music education, cello performance, and musicology from University of Massachusetts, Wichita State University, and the University of Missouri, Kansas City. Former Chair of the Frostburg State University Department of Music, her solo and chamber music programming reflects a strong commitment to the music of historical and contemporary women composers. In addition to her teaching and performing activities, she is active in musicological research, specifically in the field of women composers. She is the author of A Catalogue of Published Works for String Orchestra and Piano Trio by 20th century American Women Composers (1993), editor of a two-volume set of six string trios (1996/1997) by 18th-century composer Maddalena Lombardini-Sirmen and author of Greenwood Press’ 2001 bio-bibliography of American Composer Emma Lou Diemer. She is also a contributor to the Grove Encyclopedia of Music and Musicians (2000) and the Encyclopedia of American Women Musicians (2002). In 2007, Scarecrow Press will publish her bio-bibliography of composer Joan Tower. Dr. Grolman contributes regularly as cello/chamber music reviewer to the various string journals and is Reviews Editor for the Journal of the International Alliance for Women in Music.
