            Department of Juvenile Services has 4 youth centers throughout Allegany and Garrett County. We are a residential program that treats male clients between the ages of 13-18. These males are court ordered to our placement due to legal entanglements. The majority of youth that are in our programs are suffering form both mental health and substance abuse issues. While interning you would have the opportunity to participate in individual, group and family counseling. There are 40 clients at each center who receive all services. The services are provided mainly Monday through Friday however because we are open 7 days a week 24 hours a day, following the interns initial training they could work a very flexible schedule which best meets their needs.

The Joseph S. Massie Unit is a 25 bed, intensive treatment facility for adults experiencing the devastating effects of alcoholism and other chemical dependencies. The unit applies a holistic treatment approach that addresses the issues necessary to develop an abstinent lifestyle.  The Massie Unit is licensed by the State of Maryland and certified by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Administration as a residential drug‑free treatment program.  It is a program of the Allegany County Health Department and is located in the Thomas B. Finan Center.  The Massie Unit is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of professionals, including Addictions Counselors, Nurses, a Recreational Therapist, a Physician, and a Nutritionist. Care is provided 24‑hours a day, 7 days a week.  A belief that recovery requires a personal, professional, and a community commitment is inherent to the program's activities, which include individual and group therapies, psycho-education and self-help groups.  Aftercare Coordination is an integral part of the program geared to developing an individualized plan for continued recovery upon discharge.

Sheckler Elementary School is a suburban school of about 600 K-4 students. The current counselor has been a school counselor for 12 years and has had many interns work with her in her tenure, although to date, she has had no one from FSU.  Individuals who will do their internship here will be seeing students individually, running groups and teaching guidance lessons.  Lesson topics include bullying, conflict resolution, and careers.  Interns will also be working with parents on all kinds of issues.  Interns will not be required to do any assessments, but should a crisis situation arise, interns will get to be a part of that process.  In terns will be consulting with teachers on a variety of topics.  Most of the day will be spent either working with students individually, running groups or in the classroom.  The counselor is student centered: putting the child first and any paperwork or non-student related job is usually done after school hours.

  1. To provide psychiatric, social and psychological evaluations.
  2. To provide individual therapy and counseling to people of all ages utilizing diversified professional techniques.

  10. Clinical hours will be from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday.  Additional late hours will be offered as needed.
  11. Will cooperate with crisis staff in arranging voluntary hospitalizations (when available) for assigned clients to aid in making as smooth a transition as possible from community to inpatient.
    1. If in a scheduled appointment with the client, we will work with crisis staff but also try to work directly with the client as much as possible in arranging the admission.
    2. If out of the office or scheduled for other appointments, a request may be made for the crisis staff to implement a voluntary admission without our involvement.
    3. All voluntary admissions will be accomplished by the crisis staff during working hours. Clinical staff assigned to any specific case will be consulted when available, if they are not already aware of the situation.

The Clinical Services Unit (CSU) provides outpatient therapeutic services for children and adults who are experiencing significant anxiety, depression, relationship problems and other emotional distress.  Therapy is provided to enhance and promote developmental potential, personal growth and problem solving capabilities of the consumer.  The Clinical Services Unit provides psychological and psychiatric evaluations.  In addition to psychiatric evaluations, on-going psychiatric appointments for medication management are also available.

The Group Counseling Center (GCC) and Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) offer day treatment for adults experiencing emotional problems that interfere with their daily living.  The programs offer a variety of therapeutic, educational, recreational and supportive groups that deal with issues such as abuse, alcoholism, depression, coping with loss, family dysfunctions, self esteem, interpersonal relationships, and effectively managing your mental wellness.  Treatment is based on an individual approach under the direction of a psychiatric physician.

Long Term Structured Residence (LTSR) is a highly structured therapeutic residential mental health treatment facility designed to serve consumers 18 years of age or older.  The LTSR provides alternative treatment to consumers at risk of hospitalization.  Community integration is built into programming at every available opportunity.

OUR MISSION:
Whitman-Walker Clinic is a non-profit community-based health organization serving the Washington, DC metropolitan region.   Established by and for the gay and lesbian community, our Clinic is comprised of diverse volunteers and staff who provide or facilitate the delivery of high quality, comprehensive, accessible health care and community services.  Whitman-Walker Clinic is especially committed to ending the suffering of all those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.
BRIEF OVERVIEW:
Overview

o        Whitman-Walker Clinic was established in 1978 to provide health care services to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. The Clinic was an outgrowth of the Washington Free Clinic’s Gay Men’s STD Clinic which opened in 1973.
o        Today, the Clinic provides health care and social support services to thousands of people in our community with specialty care for those living with HIV/AIDS. Additionally, it continues the heritage of providing sensitive and compassionate health and support services to the LGBT community.
o        In 2007, Whitman-Walker Clinic served more than 13,000 individual clients.
o        Whitman-Walker Clinic has a staff of more than 200 and an annual operating budget for financial year 2008 in excess of $20 million.
o        In addition to its main facility in Northwest Washington, the Clinic has two regional centers that serve people living in Northern Virginia and east of the Anacostia River in the District of Columbia. The SMART (Suburban Maryland AIDS Reduction Team) program offers HIV testing and prevention services in suburban Maryland.
o        The Clinic has approximately 800 volunteers who serve in a variety of areas, donating tens of thousands of hours a year valued at millions of dollars.
o        The HIV/AIDS service areas at Whitman-Walker Clinic include:
–        Comprehensive outpatient medical services, including dental care.
–        At-cost HIV/AIDS-related medications provided through an on-site pharmacy that filled more than 32,000 prescriptions in 2007.
–        Nutritional assistance provided through a food bank that distributed more than 6,700 bags of groceries in 2007.
–        Legal support, including entitlements assistance, estate planning, discrimination litigation and more.
–        Case management services for more than 1,300 clients.
–        Behavioral health care services providing mental health, addiction and day treatment.
–        More than 13,000 anonymous and confidential HIV tests and counseling services annually.           

BEHAVIORAL OVERVIEW:
Behavioral Health Services
Whitman-Walker Clinic provides extensive behavioral health services for the community with specialties in care for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people and people living with HIV/AIDS. Services are available to the Spanish-speaking community through bilingual staff and volunteers.
o        Mental health services: Individual and group psychotherapy, psychiatric assessment and other psychosocial support, including referral to qualified psychotherapists, are available. 
o        Addiction services: This program is staffed by addiction treatment professionals and specially trained volunteers to help participants in their recovery from addiction. Group and individual counseling are available to help address the consequences of substance abuse while transitioning to a clean and sober lifestyle.
o        Support and therapy groups: Groups focus on mental illnesses, depression, trauma, coming out, substance abuse, relationships and intimacy, HIV/AIDS, significant others of people living with HIV/AIDS, young adults with HIV/AIDS, Maybe Baby and parenting.  The Clinic also provides peer counseling for gays and lesbians to help and support them with their concerns.
o        The Crisis Intervention Line: Emergency 24-hour crisis intervention consultation by phone to individuals experiencing a mental health emergency and to their partners, family and friends. 
o        The Bridge Back program: Whitman-Walker Clinic operates a residential treatment program in Northwest Washington for individuals dealing with emotional problems, substance abuse issues and HIV/AIDS.
