Theatre - Program Structure

The goal of the department is to provide a strong foundation in the history and literature of theatre, the finest possible training through classroom and studio instruction and enrichment of training by providing maximal opportunities through active participation. Students elect to focus in one of the following areas: Acting, Directing, Production and Design or General Theatre.

Stage experience is considered an invaluable feature of the training process for actors, directors, designers and technicians. Students experience a diverse repertoire of classical, contemporary, musical and experimental theatre work in a state-of-the-art performance facility, which houses a professional level scene shop, costume shop, black box and proscenium theatres and studio classrooms.

Unique features of the program at Frostburg State University include THEA 420, Marketing Yourself as an Actor, designed specifically to help actors plan strategies to launch their careers and our Season Too! which features fully-realized productions by select student directors. These classes create opportunities rarely found at the undergraduate level.

Theatre at Frostburg State has numerous professional employment opportunities and career networking possibilities through collaborations with the Cultural Events Series and other national and international companies.

Students are encouraged to audition for summer theatre jobs in order to practice and develop their artistic skills and make contact with other professionals in the field. A supportive faculty will also assist those students seeking Graduate opportunities.

The faculty maintains connections to university, community and national organizations in order to broaden the educational and professional experiences of our students.

Frostburg State Theatre students are consistently encouraged towards personal achievement and success and should, upon graduation, boast a well-rounded education highlighted by a noteworthy resume and production portfolio.
