This family consists of herbaceous climbing vines (in N. America) with thick rhizomes. The leaves are simple, estipulate, and usually alternate but can be whorled or opposite as well. The palmate leaf veins converge at the apex. The flowers are 3-merous and the fruits are usually capsules.
