This is a family of erect herbaceous plants growing from a creeping rhizome. They are hollow stemmed, jointed and ribbed and can have whorled branches or be branchless. The leaves are a tube-like sheath and the green spores originate from terminal strobili. These plants may be aquatic or terrestrial.
