(The Grass Family)
This is a large family of annual and perennial herbaceous plants that form mats or solitary flowering stems (culm). Leaves are 2-ranked and alternate and often attaching to a hollow culm. These leaves are flattened blades that attach by sheathing around the culm. Flowers vary and are the only reliable way to tell one species from another in most cases. The fruit is a caryopsis.
