This family includes perennial and annual herbaceous plants. The leaves are stipulate and commonly alternate and simple, although there are many variations of leaf form. The flowers come in several colors and are often bilaterally symmetrical and nodding. There are usually 5 petals and sepals with a nectary-containing spur on the back of the flower. The fruits in this family are most commonly capsules.
