This genus includes perennial herbs. The leaves come in two kinds on the plant, petiolate larger leaves and sessile scale-like leaves. The flowers are solitary and borne low to the ground attached to the rhizome. The sepals form a fleshy tub-like flower with three lobes. The seed is an ovoid capsule.
