This is a genus of the northern hemisphere including trees and shrubs with simple, alternate, and doubly serrate leaves. The bark often sheds horizontally and has prominent lenticils. The staminate flowers are in drooping catkins and the pistillate flowers give way to erect catkins containing winged samaras.
