Genus Description:

This is a genus of small trees and shrubs. The leaves are simple, alternate and heart-shaped. The flowers range from pink to purple to white.  The corolla consists of a smaller upper petal enclosed by 2 encasing side petals, and a lower petal which is the largest. There are 10 stamens and the fruit is a flat and oblong legume containing several seeds.
