This is a mostly northern temperate genus containing trees and shrubs with usually opposite, estipulate and simple leaves. The venation is pinnate and distinctively curves to follow the leaf margin prior to anastomosing. The flowers are 4-merous and the fruits are drupes that come in many colors.
