This is a rather large genus containing herbaceous, perennial vines. The leaf arrangement varies widely and may be alternate, opposite, or whorled. Often the leaves are heart-shaped and on long petioles. The flowers are yellowish green and very small. These are 3-merous and the petals and sepals unite at their bases. The fruit capsules are 3-winged and 3-valved with flat seeds.
