This genus occurs mostly in subtropical to tropical regions of the world. It includes shrubs and trees with simple, alternate, and broad leaves. The pistillate flowers are solitary while the staminate flowers may be solitary or are borne in racemose or cymose clusters. The calyx and corolla are both lobed in 4s or 6s. The fruits are large pulpy berries which retain the thick calyx where they attach to the twig.
