This is a genus of low to the ground herbaceous plants typically having opposite leaves with entire margins. The leaves are stipulate and often sheathed. The flowers are 4-merous with a narrow corolla tube and spreading petal-like lobes. The fruits are dehiscent capsules containing many seeds.
