This is a genus of trees and shrubs. The leaves are alternate, simple, and palmately veined. The margins are dentate and the leaves can be lobed or unlobed, and are ovate in shape. The buds have 3-6 scales. Flowers are borne in catkins or spikes. The fruits are syncarps; edible and enclosing the achenes.
