This is a diverse genus of perennial grasses arising from a slender root. The blades are flat or involute, and they are scaberulous in texture. The inflorescences are open or compact panicles of small spikelets which are usually 1-flowered and disarticulate above the glume. The glumes are nearly equal and the fruit is permanently enclosed by the 3-5 nerved lemma.
