Genus Description:

This is a genus of herbaceous or woody vines, trees, and shrubs. They have climbing, curling tendrils and the leaves are simple, alternate, and stipulate. They may be palmately lobed or unlobed. The flowers are borne either on a long petiole on the leaf axil or in axillary inflorescences. The flowers are solitary and 5-merous. The fruit is a many seeded berry.
