This is a genus of mostly evergreen trees and shrubs with aromatic qualities. The form is usually conical when young and maturing to a more flat topped shape. The leaves are needle-like and usually borne in fascicles of 2-5. The bark of mature plants is often plated and variously furrowed. Seed cones have spirally arranged scales and are woody. They mature in 2 years and form an umbo (scar) at the scale tips which is sometimes quite sharp. Most of the seeds have a papery wing.
