Genus Description:

This is a genus of primarily acaulescent annual and perennial herbs. Leaves are generally alternate and basal. On the plants with stems the leaves are opposite. The flowers are commonly small and in spikes or heads and wind pollinated, but there are some exceptions. The fruits are capsules or nuts.
