Genus Description:

This is a monotypic genus of a perennial herb arising from a thick rhizome with bright red-orange juice. The leaves are solitary, basal and broadly reniform, dissected by irregular lobes. The flowers are one of the earliest spring bloomers and are solitary and white with 8-16 petals. The capsule is 2-valved and narrowly elliptic.
