This is a small genus of deciduous or evergreen trees. The leaves are linear fine, flattened and alternating needles. The lateral roots create erect knees in areas or periodic flooding or water logged habitat. The bark peels in thin vertical strips. From the ends of the branches cones droop down; their scales are peltate.
