This is a genus of mostly perennial herbs arising from rhizomes. The leaves are stipulate, and generally cordate at the base and have crenate to serrate margins or are more deeply dissected. The leaves may be borne on stems or be basal only. The flowers have unequal petals; the lateral petals may be bearded and the lower petal is shorter than the others and may be spurred at the base. The fruit is a capsule.
