Duncan Given FSU President’s Distinguished Faculty Award

Dr. Sydney Duncan, chair of the Department of English at Frostburg State University and an associate professor in the department, has been selected as the third recipient of the President’s Distinguished Faculty Award from FSU President Dr. Jonathan Gibralter, an award he established to recognize and encourage those faculty members who advance the University’s mission and goals and its strategic planning initiatives.

Office for Civil Rights to Conduct Focus Groups

Campus sexual violence is an important issue that Frostburg State University takes very seriously. The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) is currently reviewing the University's policies and practices related to Title IX of the Education Amendment Acts of 1972, which is the federal law that prohibits sexual harassment and sexual violence.

Representatives from OCR will be on campus on Tuesday, April 8, and Wednesday, April 9 to conduct focus group sessions in conversation with the campus community on issues related to sexual harassment and sexual violence. OCR will also be available to speak privately with anyone regarding these issues, or to anyone who is a survivor of sexual violence or sexual harassment who may wish to speak with OCR.

FSU Faculty Member Dr. Robert Kauffman Honored With USM Award for Public Service

Dr. Robert Kauffman, a professor in the Frostburg State University Department of Recreation and Parks Management, has been awarded the Regents’ Faculty Award for Public Service, the highest honor that the University System of Maryland Board of Regents bestows to recognize exemplary faculty achievement. He will be honored at the April meeting of the board.

FSU-UMUC Collaboration to Offer Secondary Education to Military in Europe

Frostburg State University will be teaming up with University of Maryland University College to offer its undergraduate education program at military installations across Europe, part of a major Department of Defense contract with UMUC as it continues its long tradition of serving military educational needs. The initial program will present FSU’s secondary education program at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany beginning as soon as January 2014.

FSU’s Andy Duncan Wins Nebula Award for Science Fiction

Frostburg State University assistant professor of English Andy Duncan has been named the winner of the 2012 Nebula Award for Best Novelette. This prestigious annual award goes to the best science fiction or fantasy novelette published in the United States during the previous year. Duncan won the award for his novelette, “Close Encounters.” “A Nebula Award, in any category, is the highest peer award in science fiction, and I am deeply touched and grateful to know that my fellow science fiction writers so admire what I do,” Duncan said.

Space Is Still Available at the FSU Center for Creative Writing’s Savage Mountain Creative Writing Workshop
Frostburg State University’s Center for Creative Writing will host its annual Savage Mountain Creative Writing Workshop from Sunday, June 24, through Saturday, June 30, on the FSU campus. The workshop is an opportunity for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors to spend a week of intensive study in fiction or poetry writing. The cost for commuter students is $300, and for those residing on campus, $550.

FSU Renewable Energy Activities to Be Exhibited at House of Representatives
FSU will highlight its renewable energy activities at the 15th Annual Congressional Renewable Energy and Energy-Efficiency EXPO and Forum on Thursday, June 21, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Caucus Room and Veterans Affairs Committee Room (Room No. 340) of the Cannon House Office Building, U.S. House of Representatives, Washington, D.C. The event is free and open to the public. No RSVPs are required.
