2015 Faculty Achievement Award Winners Honored at University Convocation

The recipients of the 2015 Faculty Achievement Awards, with top graduating students from every degree program, will be honored at the Frostburg State University Honors Convocation on Wednesday, May 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Pealer Recital Hall of the Performing Arts Center.

FSU Adventure Sports Management 2+2 Degree With Garrett College Approved

Frostburg State University and Garrett College will offer a new collaborative Bachelor of Science in Adventure Sports Management “two plus two” program starting in fall 2015. Students in the program will have the opportunity to gain expertise in recreation activities while developing the management skills and professional connections necessary to become successful leaders in the tourism industry. The program utilizes the unique natural resource base found in Western Maryland.

FSU President Emerita Gira Honored in Naming of New Center for Communications and Information Technology

Frostburg State University’s newest academic building is now known as the Catherine R. Gira Center for Communications and Information Technology, following an unveiling ceremony today. The naming honors Gira’s 15 years of service to FSU and her distinguished career in higher education.

Held on a sunny spring morning in more than 100 well-wishers, the black and red drape covering the brick sign that now bears her name was drawn up and away as Gira stood by.

The Frostburg State University Center for Communications and Information Technology will be named in honor of President Emerita Catherine R. Gira in a dedication ceremony on Sunday, May 3, at 11:30 a.m. in the courtyard in front of the building. The naming honors Gira’s 15 years of service to FSU and her distinguished career in higher education.

Frostburg State University Featured in “The Princeton Review’s Guide to 353 Green Colleges: 2015 Edition”

Frostburg State University has once again been designated one of the 353 most environmentally responsible colleges in the country, according to The Princeton Review. The education services company, known for its test prep and tutoring services, books and college rankings, features FSU in the 2015 edition of its free book, “The Princeton Review Guide to 353 Green Colleges.” This is the fourth time, and the third year in a row, that FSU has been featured in the guide.

Tom Bowling Appointed Interim President of Frostburg State University

University System of Maryland (USM) Chancellor William E. Kirwan has appointed Tom Bowling as interim president of Frostburg State University (FSU). The appointment is effective July 1, 2015. Bowling is currently FSU’s vice president for student affairs.

Frostburg State University Expands Regional Tuition Rate Zone to 120-Mile Radius

FROSTBURG, Md. – Residents of Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and Ohio living within 120 miles of Frostburg State University may be eligible for a newly expanded Regional Tuition Rate that will save them about $4,600 per year over out-of-state tuition. This same regional rate previously only applied in counties contiguous to Western Maryland.

Carl “Buck” Belt Presented With FSU Foundation Pinnacle Award

In recognition of nearly 24 years of continuous service to the Frostburg State University Foundation Board of Directors, Carl “Buck” Belt, Jr., was presented with the Pinnacle Award, the highest honor bestowed by the FSU Foundation, during the University’s annual Sloop Institute for Excellence in Leadership on March 6.

FSU’s Dr. Gregory Latta and Robert Hein Receive Individual Artist Awards From Maryland State Arts Council

For a second time, two Frostburg State University faculty members, Dr. Gregory Latta of the Department of Physics and Engineering and Robert Hein of the Department of Visual Arts, have received the Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award, which recognizes the importance of artists and their works of excellence to the cultural vibrancy of Maryland. A celebration to honor the awardees will be held on Monday, June 8, at the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore.

Frostburg State University Earns Third-Year Honors as Tree Campus USA

For the third year in a row, Frostburg State University has been honored as a Tree Campus USA for its commitment to effective urban forest management. The program, launched in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation and sponsored by Toyota, “honors colleges and universities and their leaders for promoting healthy trees and engaging students and staff in the spirit of conservation,” according to the Arbor Day Foundation.
