The 13th Commencement Ceremony for graduates of the Frostburg State University Hagerstown Center will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 27, at The Maryland Theatre, Potomac Street, Hagerstown.
FSU President Catherine R. Gira will confer graduate and undergraduate degrees. Featured speakers will be The Honorable Senator Donald F. Munson and FSU student Gary Austin.
Munson has been serving Washington County and Maryland since his election to the Maryland House of Delegates in 1974. In every election since his entry into the House of Delegates, he won his seat with more the two-thirds of the vote, including winning 82 percent of the vote in his 1994 re-election to the Senate. Munson has been a member of the Maryland Senate since 1990. Among the legislation he has helped to sponsor during his nearly 30 years in office are the Maryland Lemon Law, help for senior citizens needing prescription medication, protection for the Chesapeake Bay from oil spills and protection for the state's caves from vandalism and dumping. He has fought to increase funding for Hagerstown Community College and is helping to bring the University System of Maryland center to downtown Hagerstown. He has one of the best attendance records in the Senate and has handled more than 80,000 constituent requests during his tenure in state government.
Student Gary Austin, of Funkstown, earns his liberal studies/sociology degrees with a concentration in public administration, while working fulltime as a building inspector for the Washington County Department of Permits and Inspections. He is the recipient of the 2002 Career Connections Award of Excellence for Liberal Studies and Sociology, the 2003 Career Connections Award of Excellence for Liberal Studies and a Partnership in Education-Dynamark and Freeman Charitable Trust Award in 2002. He was inducted into Alpha Kappa Delta, a national honorary society for sociology and was also inducted into Pinnacle, a national honorary society for adult learners. In the community, he is a past PTA president and has been active in local high school band booster organizations. He will pursue a Masters of Liberal Arts degree at McDaniel College in Westminster.
