Freshman Kelly Filipowicz (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach)
scored the game-winning goal for Frostburg State in overtime off a penalty shot to beat Houghton 4-3 win.
With the win, Frostburg State improves to 6-12, while Houghton falls to 7-7.
The first goal of the day came from junior Brittney Russell (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) off a penalty corner to put the Bobcats up 1-0.
The Highlanders got on the board four minutes later with a goal from freshman Ashley Hoffman off a penalty corner.
Just before halftime, Filipowicz ran by a defender on the left side and beat the HC goaltender short side to put the Bobcats up 2-1 at the half.
The Highlanders scored 2:47 into the second half when Hoffman netted her second score of the contest to tie the game at 2-2. One minute later HC’s Stacy Garber scored off a penalty corner to put the visitors up 3-2.
Filipowicz answered one minute and three seconds later off a penalty corner to tie things up at three apiece.
Houghton had its chances early in overtime when Hoffman peppered junior goalkeeper Amanda Runion (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) with two shots, however, the keeper stopped both attempts to keep the score knotted at three.
At the 77:15 mark, HC fouled a FSU player and a penalty shot was awarded to Frostburg State.
Filipowicz took the penalty shot for the Bobcats with 7:45 left on the game clock in overtime to give FSU the win.
Runion faced fifteen shots, making twelve saves, while Highlander goalie Erin Frederick allowed four goals and made three saves.
The Bobcats are back in action next Saturday, November 4 when they host Christopher Newport at 1:00 pm.
