04/25/2003

Ken Demus, a certified adventure trainer and physical educator, will speak at Frostburg State University on Monday, May 5, as the 2003 Lillian M. Wellner Scholar, a program that brings acclaimed scholars to campus.

Two sessions will be held. Intended primarily for physical education majors, the morning session will run from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The afternoon session, from 1 to 4 p.m., is intended for recreation majors. Both sessions are free and open to the public.

Now employed with the High Five Adventure Learning Center in Vermont, Demus has been a certified adventure trainer for 17 years. His presentation will feature interactive participation with the audience.

Demus taught elementary physical education for four years and middle school physical education for 29 years at Mamaroneck, New York, and has coached high school baseball and wrestling. He was named the State of New York Association Middle School Teacher of the Year for 1993. In 1994, Demus was named the Eastern District Association AAHPERD Middle School Teacher of the Year and was a finalist for the NASPE Middle School Teacher of the Year. He has authored articles for JOHPER, Strategies and Ziplines.

The Lillian M. Wellner Scholar Distinguished Lecture Series was established by Dr. Harold J. Cordts, former chair of the FSU's Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. Named for the late Wellner, a former Frostburg State registrar and physical education instructor, the Series is supported by an endowment established in her name.
