PITTSBURGH, Pa. -
The Frostburg State baseball team defeated host and top seed La Roche, 12-8 Saturday morning, to advance to the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship Game for the second year in a row.
FSU (30-13) will face LAR (26-17) in the championship, after the Redhawks eliminated Medaille this afternoon 17-7, setting up the rematch. This marks the second-straight season that Frostburg State will take on La Roche for the AMCC Title and the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The game will take place Sunday morning at 9:00 am.
The Bobcat win also pushed the team over the 30-win plateau for the first time since 2003. That year FSU was 31-12-1. The 1976 Bobcats hold the school, posting a 35-8-1 overall mark.
Frostburg State posted five runs in the first inning but La Roche narrowed the gap with two in the bottom of the inning. LAR would outscore FSU 5-2 over the next two innings to tie the game at 7-7 after three innings. However, the Bobcats would answer with one run in the fifth and two in both the sixth and eighth innings while holding the hosts to just a single run in the eighth.
Junior Bryan Burke (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst (LIU)) led FSU with four hits, including two doubles and a triple, classmate Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) led the team with three RBIs and fellow junior Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) led the unit with three runs scored.
Burke was 4-for-6 with a pair of RBIs and scored a run, Peake finished 2-for-3 with two runs and his second homerun of the AMCC Tournament and Speights was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two doubles.
The game started with back-to-back triples by Burke and senior Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) as the Bobcats quickly led 1-0. Speights then doubled to plate Gitzen and after senior Ryan Webb (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) singled, Peake smashed a three-run homerun for a 5-0 FSU lead.
Webb doubled home a run in the second and Burke doubled home another run in the third but La Roche was up for the challenge and plated seven runs of its own over the first three innings. Nate McCollough and Eric McCombie each drove in a pair of runs to lead the comeback.
Burke had yet another RBI double in the fifth and sophomore Joe Clark (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) doubled home two more in the sixth as FSU led 10-7.
Senior Art Barone (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley) and junior Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) each had an RBI in the eighth and Frostburg State held La Roche to just one run in the eighth as the scoring ended.
Senior Todd Holmes (New Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) earned the win on the mound for the Bobcats tossing 4.2 innings in relief while allowing just one run on seven hits. Derek Lear took the loss for the Redhawks allowing all five FSU runs in the first without recording an out.
