05/01/2004

BRADFORD, PA - The fourth-seeded Frostburg State baseball team followed an upset of top-seeded Pitt-Bradford with a 7-3 victory over No. 3 Penn State Altoona Saturday morning in the AMCC Tournament.

Senior Ryan Hamerski (Sherwood/Olney, Md.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored as the Bobcats came back using a three-run fourth inning to claim the winner's bracket championship.

Pitt-Bradford, who needed two straight victories over FSU to claim the Conference title, won the first game of the Finals 3-1 on Saturday afternoon, leaving a one game winner take all game for Sunday May 2nd at noon.

Against Penn State Altoona, the Bobcats scored three times in the fourth to overcome a 2-1 deficit. Senior Justin Wilt (Brunswick/Brunswick, Md.) drove in senior Sean Davis (Sherwood/Olney, Md.) and later scored on an RBI-single by senior Kevin Romanik (Millville/Millville, N.J.).

The Bobcats added another run in the sixth on solo homer by Hamerski before tacking on single runs in the seventh and eighth.

Senior Brent Lutz went six and two-thirds innings for the victory. He allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out two.

Freshman Frank Sutton (Robert C. Byrd/Clarksburg, W.Va.), sophomore Mike Tiller (Potomac/Dumfries, Va.) and freshman Collin Bednar (Glen Burnie/Millersville, Md.) also saw action on the mound and combined to allow only three hits in 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

Offensively, the Bobcats received a total team effort as six different hitters recorded an RBI and eight ofc FSU's nine batters recorded hits.

In the first game of the finals, the Bobcats and Panthers entered the eighth inning tied at 1-1. Then Ryan Synder came through with a two-out two-run single to put Pitt-Bradford up 3-1 heading into the ninth.

In the first game of the AMCC tournament the Bobcats rallied from a 7-5 deficit to score seven runs. This time the Bobcats threatened as they had the tying run reach base with only one out but could not capitalize.

On the mound, junior Daryl Keys (Salem Central/Salem, N.Y.) went seven strong innings allowing two runs, one earned on two hits for the loss.
