RUTHER GLEN, Va. -
In a single nine-inning game Sunday, the Frostburg State baseball team defeated Old Westbury 8-5 to push its winning streak to six games.
Freshman Rob Mathias (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty HS (Potomac State)) earned the win for the Bobcats (6-4) after pitching 8.0 innings allowing four runs, three earned, on 10 hits while fanning six. Sophomore Scott Eastment (Warrenton, Va./Paul VI (Georgetown)) tossed the ninth inning in relief, earning the save after giving up one run on two hits.
After the Panthers opened the game with two runs in the top of the first, FSU plated three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 advantage. OW tied the game in the top of the second after scoring a run.
Frostburg State took the lead for good with three runs in the third and one run in both the fourth and fifth innings while limiting Old Westbury to one run in the fifth and ninth inning.
Senior Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) was 2-for-4 with three runs scored, one RBI, one walk and his second homerun of the season. Junior Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, two runs, two walks and a double while classmate Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk.
The Bobcats return to action on Saturday, March 10 when they host St. Joseph’s for a doubleheader at noon.
