Baseball Dominates Hilbert; Combines For 29 runs and 28 Hits in Sweep

HAMBURG, N.Y. -Frostburg State registered its second Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference sweep of the season with 13-5 and 16-1 victories over Hilbert, Sunday.

With the victories, FSU earned its 20th win of the season and now sits at 20-12 overall and 8-4 in the AMCC. HC, losers of four straight, is now 5-18 overall and 2-12 in the conference.

In the opener, the Bobcats scored 13 runs on 11 hits and took advantage of five Hawk errors to earn the victory. Junior Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford)led FSU (3-for-5) with three hits, three RBIs and a run scored. Classmate Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) was 2-for-5 and tied a season-high with four runs.

Frostburg State scored six runs in the first two innings to jump out to a 6-1 lead. After being held scoreless in the third, the Bobcats plated four runs in the fourth and two in the fifth for a 12-1 edge. Hilbert scored three in bottom of the sixth and both teams scored a run in the seventh.

The offensve output was all sophomore starter Scott Eastment (Warrenton, Va./Paul VI (Georgetown)) (4-1) needed, as he allowed one run on one hit in 5.0 innings while striking out three.

Frostburg State bettered its offense in the nightcap, hitting four homeruns including a season-high 17 hits in the 16-1 win.

Peake continued his hot bat going 3-for-3 with four RBIs and four runs including a homerun. Junior Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) was 4-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs while senior Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Speights was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Mitchell, Gitzen and Speights each had a homerun in the game two win.

HC held a slim 1-0 lead after the first inning but FSU quickly erased the deficit with an eight-run second and a four-run third. The visitors would later add two runs in the final two innings to cap the scoring.

Senior Todd Holmes (New Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) earned his second win of the year for the Bobcats, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing just one run on two hits.

FSU returns to the field on April 26 when it travels to Mt. Aloysius for a doubleheader at noon.
