04/19/2002

ERIE, PA - Sophomore Mike Thomas (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) tossed a complete game, and senior Steve Simpson (Harrington, Del./Lake Forest) fell a home run short of the cycle as Frostburg State downed Penn State Altoona, 9-4, in an elimination game of the AMCC Tournament Friday afternoon at Penn State Behrend.

The Bobcats (17-10) advance to another elimination game on Saturday at noon and will face the loser of the Penn State Behrend-Pitt-Bradford contest that will be played Saturday at 9 a.m.

Frostburg State took control of the game in the first inning, as its first six batters scored.

Junior Jake Mannon (Southampton, N.J./Lenape) laced a two-run double, senior Chris Hammond (Brookville, Md./Sherwood (Montgomery-Germantown)) followed with a two-run home run, and sophomore Eric Edelman (Silver Spring, Md./Sherwood) drilled an RBI-triple before scoring on a wild pitch as FSU opened a 6-0 lead.

Chris Chirdon put Penn State Altoona on the board in the second with an RBI-double, but the Bobcats answered in the fourth, scoring a run when sophomore Sean Davis (Olney, Md./Sherwood) grounded into a double play.

FSU increased its lead to 9-1 in the fifth on an RBI-single by junior Dave Sanchez (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) and a run-scoring groundout by junior Mark Teson (Latham, N.Y./Shaker).

The Cougars scored twice in the sixth and added an unearned run in the ninth to cap the scoring.

Thomas allowed 12 hits and three earned runs in the complete-game effort to even his record at 2-2 on the season. He struck out four and walked one.

Simpson finished 3-for-4 with a single, double, triple and two runs scored, while Junior Tim Wilkins (Baltimore, Md./Mervo) was 3-for-3 with a triple and a run.
