Baseball Drops Contest to Emory

SAVANNAH, GA — Frostburg State committed five errors, allowing six unearned runs to score in a 10-6 loss at Emory University on Tuesday afternoon. The Bobcats fell behind 8-0 after four innings and made a late charge to pull even but could not manage as they left eight runners stranded on base, six in the final four innings.

The Bobcats,(9-4-1), fell behind three nothing after two innings as the Eagles put two across in the first on two hits, two walks and a hit batter. Emory added another run in the second on a bases-empty two-out walk, followed by two singles.

The game was opened up in the fourth inning as Emory put five unearned runs on the board. The Bobcats began the inning with two errors followed by an infield bunt single to load the bases.

Emory then singled twice, scoring three runs on the second single. They followed up with a batter hit by a pitch, a RBI double and finished with a sacrifice fly.

Freshman Mike Tiller (Potomac/Dumfries, Va.),(0-2), was relieved after giving-up eight runs on seven hits. He walked three, struck -out three and hit two batters.

FSU bounced-back when it freshman Matt Sillers (Pallotti/Columbia, Md.) came in to relieve Tiller. Sillers went went three innings, giving-up just one run.

The Bobcats began to piece together some offensive scoring when they scored two in the sixth on a lead-off double by senior Mark Teson (Shaker/Latham, N.Y.), which was followed by a single by junior Sean Davis (Sherwood/Olney, Md.).

Junior Taylor Dixon (Robinson/Fairfax, Va.) then reached base on an error by the thirdbaseman, loading the bases for sophomore Scott Feller (American Heritage/Coral Springs, Fla.).

Feller was able to earn a RBI walk, which was followed by a sacrifice fly by junior Ryan Hamerski (Sherwood/Olney, Md.).

The Bobcats stranded the remaining runners with two more pop flies. FSU remained quiet until the top of the ninth where they trailed 10-2.

Senior Bobby Farmer (Wheaton/Rockville, Md.) led off the inning with a bunt single. Senior Jake Mannon (Lenape/Southhampton, N.J.) followed, reaching base on another Emory error.

Both Mannon and Farmer were then advanced by a wild pitch by relief pitcher Brye Adler. Senior Tim Wilkins (Mervo/Baltimore, Md.) brought Farmer home with a sacrifice fly and senior Dave Sanchez (Urbana/Buckeystown, Md.) followed with a single to center, putting runners at first and third.

Teson reached on another Eagle error scoring Mannon from third. Davis flied out for the second out which was followed by a Dixon four-pitch walk and a two-run single by senior Pat Fortunato (Fairport/Fairport, N.Y.).

Emory, not wanting to risk an eight-run comeback, turned to Reed Harvey for the final out. Freshman Shawn Abrilz (Comack/Comack, N.Y.) battled, but grounded-out to the shortstop to cap the contest.

Bright spots for the Bobcats included pitching from Sillers and the hitting produced by Wilkins. Wilkins went 2-3 with a double and a RBI sacrifice fly.

Teson remained strong, going 1-4 with two walks and two-runs scored. Defensively, Teson ran down several hard hit fly balls to center.

The Bobcats will look to bounce back in their final game of their spring break trip in Georgia when they face La Grange on Wednesday at 3 pm.
