MARYVILLE, TN —
Maryville (Tenn.) College rallied for a 5-4 win in game one and posted an 11-2 victory in the nightcap to sweep visiting Frostburg State Monday afternoon.
In the opener, the Bobcats (5-5) built a 4-0 lead after four innings, but the Fighting Scots rallied with three runs in the sixth before scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the victory.
FSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI-singles from junior Jake Mannon (Southampton, N.J./Lenape) and sophomore Ryan Hamerski (Olney, Md./Sherwood).
Senior Steve Simpson (Harrington, Del./Lake Forest) added a sacrifice fly in the second and an RBI-single in the fourth to give the Bobcats a 4-0 advantage.
However, Maryville trimmed the Bobcat lead with a three-run sixth inning.
Dustin Bowen put the Fighting Scots on the board with an RBI-single, and Matt Feathers later added a run-scoring fielder's choice to cut their deficit in half. Justin Kidd then pulled his team to within one with a sacrifice fly.
In the seventh, Jesse Cragwell tied the game with an RBI-double, and Mark Deml's two-out single plated Cragwell with the winning run.
Sophomore reliever Chris McGarvey (Fallentimber, Pa./Glondalo) suffered the loss after allowing two runs on two hits in 1 2/3 innings to fall to 0-1 on the year.
Sophomore starter Mike Thomas (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) gave up just two hits and one run in five innings of work.
Josh Ringley went the distance for Maryville, allowing 11 hits and four runs while striking out six.
Simpson led FSU with a 3-for-3 effort and drove in a pair of runs.
In the second contest, Maryville scored four runs in the fourth inning to snap a 2-2 tie and cruised to the victory.
FSU opened the scoring in the second on a solo home run by senior Chris Hammond (Brookeville, Md./Sherwood (Montgomery-Germantown)), but the Fighting Scots answered in the bottom of the frame on Sam Caylor's RBI-single.
Maryville moved ahead on Cragwell's RBI-triple in the third before the Bobcats pulled even in the fourth on a Simpson run-scoring single.
However, the Fighting Scots scored nine runs in their final three at-bats to take control. Stephen Triplett laced a two-run double as part of a four-run fourth inning, and Deml added a two-run home run in the sixth to cap the win.
Bobcat sophomore Dan Sidorowicz (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) allowed four runs on five hits in three innings to fall to 2-1 on the year, while Jason Phillips gave up two runs on five hits in five innings to pick up the win for Maryville.
Frostburg State continues its spring break southern trip tomorrow when it takes on Piedmont (Ga.) College in a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 p.m.
