FROSTBURG, Md. -
The Frostburg State baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent La Roche, Friday afternoon, 9-8 (8 inn.) and 10-8.
Seniors Todd Holmes (New Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) and Ryan Webb (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) led FSU (16-11, 5-3) at the plate. Holmes was a combined 4-for-5 with four RBIs, two runs scored and two homeruns while Webb was 3-for-6 with three runs scored, two RBIs and a homerun.
The Redhawks (14-10, 7-3) rallied in the opener from a an 8-6 deficit with two runs in the top of the sixth and the game-winning run in the top of the eighth. Drew Bosco led off the final inning for the visitors with a walk. He advanced to third after a sac bunt and a ground out and scored the winning run on a Bobcat infield error.
La Roche plated one run in the first for the early lead but Webb gave FSU a 2-1 lead with a two-run homerun in bottom of inning.
LAR countered in the top of the second with five runs for a 6-2 advantage. Keith Borman and Nick Wendell each recorded two RBIs during the inning.
The Bobcats would regain the lead scoring three runs in the bottom of the second, two runs in the fourth and a single run in the fifth for an 8-6 lead. In the second, Holmes hit a solo homerun and classmate Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) had a two-run double while in the juniors Bryan Burke (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst (LIU)) and Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) each had RBIs in the fourth. Junior Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) scored Frostburg State’s lone run in the fifth on an error.
Burke suffered the loss after tossing 5.0 innings in relief. He allowed three runs, none earned, on four hits while striking out one. Nate McCollough earned the first of his two wins on the afternoon after pitching the final 2.0 innings and holding the Bobcats to just one hit.
In the second game, the Redhawks rallied from an 8-7 deficit with three runs in the top of the seventh for the 10-8 win.
LAR again opened the game with one run in the first, but FSU plated three runs in the bottom of the inning for a 3-1 edge. After a scoreless second, Darin Sharek had a two-run single to help propel La Roche to a four-run third and a 5-3 lead. Holmes tied the game for FSU in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run single to left.
After La Roche took a 7-5 lead in the top of the fifth, junior Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) and Holmes led off the inning with back-to-back solo homers to tie the game. Later in the inning, Gitzen plated Mitchell with a sac fly for the final run of the game for FSU.
In the seventh, Drew Bosco had a bases loaded RBI single that tied the game and Borman had a two-run single that gave the visitor’s the lead for good.
Senior Frank Sutton (Clarksburg, W.Va./Robert Byrd) endured the loss for the Bobcats after allowing all three runs in the seventh, his only inning of work. McCollough earned the win for the Redhawks after pitching two innings in relief and holding the Bobcats hitless.
FSU returns to the field on Tuesday when it travels to Mt. Aloysius for a doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
