- The Frostburg State baseball team dropped two Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference games to Penn State Altoona as they dropped the first game 5-3 and the second 1-0.
In the first game, the Bobcats (14-11, 2-2) wasted a great opportunity in the first as Feller doubled off the wall in straight-away center field to put runners at second and third with one out.
Hamerski then loaded the bases as he was hit by a pitch, but the Bobcats could not capitalize as they left all three runners stranded with back-to-back pop-ups to close out the inning.
In second FSU took a 1-0 advantage as Chris Jones grounded to the shortstop Jeff Thompson, but a two-base error allowed senior Kevin Romanik (Millville, N.J./Millville) to score from second.
In the third inning, Penn State Altoona (10-11, 3-1) bounced back to take a 2-1 lead. Altoona put together two walks and a string of three singles off of Bobcat starter, senior Brent Lutz (Toms Brook, Va./Central) to take a short lived lead as in the bottom of the fourth the Bobcats tied the game at 2-2.
Sophomore Kyle Mahan (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) drove in Romanik on a two-out single to center. However, the Bobcats continued to struggle with runners in scoring position as they had 15 runners in scoring position and only scored three of them, one by way of a Lion error.
In the sixth inning, Lutz left the game still tied at two with a runner on first and one-out. Freshman Collin Bednar (Millersville, Md./Glen Burnie) came in and closed out the inning on a strike out and a caught stealing.
Lutz went five and a third innings allowing just the two runs on five hits in the no decision. He struck out four and was able to keep the Bobcats in the game as the defense committed three errors.
However, in the top of the seventh a two-out error led to three unearned runs for the Lions as Bednar almost worked himself out of a bases loaded jam.
In the bottom of the seventh the Bobcats mounted a rally as freshman Chris Jones (Towson, Md./Towson) and senior Sean Davis (Olney, Md./Sherwood) reached on a walk and a hit by pitch. FSU was only able to get one across leaving two-more runners on base.
Feller’s double in the first game extended his hitting streak to 16-games as he went 3-3 with two doubles. However he left the game in the fifth after he was injured round third base.
In the second game the Lions scored the games only run on a leadoff solo-homerun by Andy Clouse off of FSU starter, sophomore Mike Tiller (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) in the fourth inning.
The homerun was the first allowed by Tiller on the season and the first earned run allowed in his last 10 and two-thirds innings pitched.
However, this was a game of pitching as both starters dominated as Altoona’s starter Andy Stottlemyer pitched seven scoreless innings allowing only three hits and striking out five.
Tiller pitched six innings allowing only five hits while striking out three.
The Bobcats will look to bounce back as they host AMCC opponent La Roche on Wednesday April 7 in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
