Baseball Edged by La Grange
03/28/2002

LAGRANGE, GA — Lagrange College scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning and held off Frostburg State for a 3-2 victory Thursday afternoon at Panther Stadium.

Frostburg State (6-6) took a 1-0 lead in the first when junior Jake Mannon (Southampton, N.J./Lenape) was hit by a pitch and later scored on a two-out single by sophomore Eric Edelman (Silver Spring, Md./Sherwood).

However, the Panthers scored three times in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good. Josh Deyton singled and moved to third, and Bo Bray's two-out grounder to third was misplayed allowing Deyton to come home and tie the game.

After Matt Mazikowski was hit by a pitch, Andy Johnson and Luke Wilkinson hit back-to-back run-scoring singles to give La Grange a 3-1 edge.

The Bobcats pulled to within one in the third inning when senior Steve Simpson (Harrington, Del./Lake Forest) walked and scored on a double by senior Chris Hammond (Brookeville, Md./Sherwood (Montgomery-Germantown)).

FSU had runners at first and third with two outs in the fifth but could not get a run across.

The Bobcats also threatened in the ninth as sophomore Ryan Hamerski (Olney, Md./Sherwood) reached on an error to start the inning. But, Panther reliever Patrick McCarthy recorded a strikeout and a game-ending double play to seal the win.

The loss spoiled a fine outing by Bobcat junior starter Dave Huber (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore (Montgomery-Germantown)), who scattered 11 singles, struck out four and allowed no earned runs in 7 2/3 innings of work.

Panther reliever Travis Thomas picked up the win, allowing just one hit and striking out six in 5 2/3 innings.

Frostburg State returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Penn State Behrend in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick beginning at 1:00 p.m.
