Baseball Ends Regular Season With Split Against Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, PA — Frostburg State closed out its regular season by splitting a non-conference doubleheader at Westminster College Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats won the first game, 6-5 in eight innings, while the Titans took the nightcap, 7-5.

In the opener, Frostburg State (20-14) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a leadoff home run by senior Chris Hammond (Brookville, Md./Sherwood (Montgomery-Germantown)).

The Titans moved in front in the fifth behind Brian Goettler's two-run blast, but the Bobcats pulled even in the sixth when sophomore Ryan Hamerski (Olney, Md./Sherwood) laced a run-scoring double.

The teams then exchanged runs in the seventh to send the game into an extra frame.

The Bobcats exploded for three runs in the eighth on RBI-singles by junior Dave Sanchez (Monrovia, Md./Urbana), junior Bobby Farmer (Rockville, Md./Wheaton (Montgomery-Germantown)) and sophomore Sean Davis (Olney, Md./Sherwood) to open a seemingly comfortable 6-3 advantage.

Westminster (22-7), which had its 11-game winning streak snapped with the loss, closed to within a run in its final chance as Goettler smacked another two-run homer, but Bobcat freshman reliever Billye Hollister (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) got a fly out to end the game and improved to 4-1 on the year.

Sanchez led at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, while Hammond and Hamerski each had two hits, two runs scored an an RBI.

Goettler went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBIs for the Titans.

In the nightcap, Westminster took a 4-0 lead in the first inning and held off a late Bobcat charge.

FSU, which has now won 20 or more games five of the last six seasons. cut its deficit in half in the third on a two-run double by junior Tim Wilkins (Baltimore, Md./Mervo), but Titan junior Kevin Culp countered with a two-run home run in the inning to give the hosts a 6-2 advantage.

Hammond smacked a two-run shot in the sixth to pull the Bobcats to within 6-4, but Westminster kept FSU at bay with another run in the bottom of the frame to open a 7-4 bulge.

Senior Steve Simpson (Harrington, Del./Lake Forest) drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh to make it a 7-5 contest, but Titan reliever Bryan Hilbert recorded a strikeout the seal the win.

Pat Boyle allowed four runs on on five hits and struck out eight in 5 2/3 innings to improve to 11-2.

Bobcat sophomore Dan Sidorowicz (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) allowed three earned runs on three hits in one inning to fall to 4-3.

Wilkins, Hammond and junior Mark Teson (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) had two hits apiece to pace FSU.
