Baseball Falls to Chowan in Slugfest
02/21/2004

MURFREESBORO, NC - Frostburg State dropped a 14-8 slugfest to Chowan on the second day of the Chowan Invitational Saturday. The Bobcats will face either Apprentice or Western Connecticut State in the third-place game Sunday at 10:30 am.

Chowan jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Nick Hagler smacked a double and later scored on a double-play grounder.

The Braves added another run in the second before the Bobcats moved in front with a three runs in the home half of the inning.

Freshman Todd Holmes (New Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) led off with a double and junior Chris Baugher (Frederick, Md./Brunswick) reached on an error.

Senior Justin Wilt (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) laced a double to right to score Holmes before sophomore Kyle Mahan (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) pulled FSU even with an RBI-single.

Freshman Mike Gitzen (Arlington, Va./Potomac Falls) added a run-scoring fielder's choice to put the Bobcats ahead 4-3.

The lead would last long, however, as Chowan exploded for eight runs in the fourth. The Braves sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning and benefitted from three of FSU's five errors on the day.

FSU (0-3) looked to rally in the bottom of the frame and scored four times to cut its deficit to 10-7. Senior Ryan Hamerski (Olney, Md./Sherwood) drew a pinch-hit bases-loaded walk to plate the first run and senior Sean Davis (Olney, Md./Sherwood) drove in another run with a fielder's choice.

Junior Scott Feller (Coral Springs, Fla./American Heritage) drilled a two-run double to cap the inning.

But, Chowan kept its offensive onslaught going with two runs in both the fifth and sixth to open a 14-7 cushion.

The Bobcats closed out the scoring in the seventh on a two-out RBI-double by freshman Brandon Murrell (St. Michael's, Md./St. Michael's).

Sophomore starter Daryl Keys (Salem, N.Y./Salem Central) took the loss after giving up five runs in 3 1/3 innings. He struck out five and walked one.

Senior Johnathan Smith picked up the win for the Braves despite allowing six runs over three innings.
