Baseball Loses to No. 1 Ranked Otterbein, 10-8
03/21/2007

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Despite an early 5-1 lead, the Frostburg State baseball team fell to No. 1 ranked Otterbein, 10-8, Wednesday in Port Charlotte, Fla.

FSU (11-8) ends its spring break with a 2-2 overall record including a 1-1 mark against ranked teams.

Otterbein starter Seth Winegar earned the win pitching 6.0 innings allowing five runs on four hits while striking out five. Freshman Joe Garrity (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) ended up with the loss for the Bobcats throwing 1.0 inning allowing three runs on four hits while fanning one.

Sophomore Kyle Timme (Pasadena, Md./Mt. St. Joseph's) earned the start for FSU but didn’t factor in the decision after lasting just 3.0 innings and giving three runs on six hits.

Senior Mike Gitzen 9Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored including a solo homerun. Junior Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored while classmate Bryan Burke (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst (LIU)) was 1-for-5 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored as well.

OC took an early 1-0 in the top of the second when Tyler Rudman doubled home Pat Connor.

Sophomore Joe Clark (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) got FSU on the board in the bottom of the second knocking in the first of five runs for the Bobcats in the inning. Clark plated senior Art Barone (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley) with a sacrifice bunt to tie the game at 1-1 for Frostburg State. Mitchell then tripled to center field scoring Gitzen and senior Todd Holmes (New Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) and Burke hit an inside the park homerun scoring Mitchell to cap the scoring.

The Cardinals narrowed the FSU lead to 5-3 with a pair of runs in the fourth. Bret Billhardt scored Connor on a fielder’s choice and Chris Kovanda scored Billhardt on a ground out to third base.

Otterbein assumed a 7-5 lead in the top of the seventh with four runs. Chris Martin had a two-run single while Rudman and Bobby Wright each posted RBI singles during the inning.

Frostburg State added one run in the seventh thanks to a Cardinal error in the outfield. Barone hit a routine fly ball to left field that was misplayed by the outfield allowing junior Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) to cross the plate and make the score 7-6 in favor of Otterbein.

Gitzen pulled the game even at 7-7 with a solo homerun over the left field fence in the eight inning.

However, in the ninth the Cardinals took a 10-7 lead highlight by a two-run single by Kovanda.

Frostburg State returns to the field on Saturday when it opens Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action at Bob Wells Field at 1:00 pm.
