- Frostburg State University opened its 2003 AMCC season by splitting a pair of games at LaRoche College Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats dropped the first game 4-0, but bounced back to earn the split with a 6-1 victory in the second game.
In game two, sophomore Billye Hollister (Thomas Stone/Waldorf, Md.) earned his second victory of the season pitching seven innings giving up only one unearned run while striking out eleven batters without allowing a walk. Hollister has yet to allow an earned run on the season as he has pitched 22 and one third innings, striking out 25, walking only 8.
Frostburg State (8-2-1, 1-1-0) jumped out to a early one run lead in the second as junior Charles Jackson (Chesapeake/Baltimore, Md.)singled to lead off the inning and was brought in on a sacrifice fly by senior Mark Teson (Shaker/Latham, N.Y.). The Bobcats opened it up in the fifth inning as they added three runs on four hits. Back to back singles by juniors Sean Davis (Sherwood/Olney, Md.)and Taylor Dixon (Robinson/Fairfax, Va.), followed by a walk to sophomore Scott Feller (American Heritage/Coral Springs, Fla.) loaded the bases for sophomore Chris Baugher (Brunswick/Frederick, Md.) who brought in Davis on a sacrifice fly. Jackson and senior Bobby Farmer (Montgomery C.C./Rockville, Md.) each followed with RBI singles.
The Bobcats added two more runs in the top of the seventh but it was more than Hollister needed as he threw more than 110 pitches on his way to the complete game.
Farmer led the Bobcats going 4-4 with four singles, two stolen bases, a run scored and an RBI. Davis and Dixon lead the top of the order going a combined 4-7 with two runs scored.
In the opening game of the double-header, junior Brent Lutz (Central/Toms Brook, Va.) (3-1) could not get any offensive support in another solid outing. In the losing effort, Lutz pitched six innings allowing only two earned runs on six hits, striking out two and walking two.
For La Roche, Justin Slavicek shutdown the Bobcats hitters striking out eight, walking only one in the complete game shutout. The Bobcats only managed three hits, a Teson lead off single in the first, a double by senior Jake Mannon (Lenape/Southampton, N.J.) in the second and a Feller single in the seventh.
"We played well for to open AMCC play against a very good LaRoche team," said Head Coach Chris McKnight. "I was impressed by the way we were able to bounce back from a below average performance in the first game."
The Bobcats will next play on Monday as they will begin a week of play in South Carolina and Georgia as part of their spring break trip.
