FROSTBURG, Md. -
The Frostburg State baseball team opened Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action with a split against Medaille Sunday afternoon at Bob Wells Field.
FSU (10-7, 1-1 AMCC) scored three runs in the first inning and two in the third to open a 5-0 lead, while holding MC (3-9, 1-1 AMCC) to just one hit over the first five innings, to earn a 7-3 win in game one. In the second game, the Mavericks scored on a passed ball in the top of the seventh to break a 2-2 tie, and earn a 3-2 victory.
In the first game, sophomores Jordan Crystal (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst (Monmouth)) and Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) led the way in the first inning with an RBI single and double, respectively, as the Bobcats opened a 3-0 lead.
FSU extended it leads in the third, adding two runs, when sophomore Joe Daddura (Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) scored on a bases-loaded hit batter and senior Kyle Mahan (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) singled home junior Rob Comerford (Herndon, Va./Oakton (Garrett College)).
Medaille scored three runs in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to 5-3, but Frostburg State added two more runs in the bottom of the inning to seal the win.
Senior starter Billye Hollister (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) threw seven innings giving up one earned run on four hits while striking out nine to earn his fourth win of the season.
In the second game, the Mavericks opened with one run in both the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. The hosts got on the board in the third when Peake smashed a leadoff solo homerun.
The Bobcats tied the game in the fifth inning when junior Chris Jones (Baltimore, Md./Towson) singled home Mahan.
In the top of the seventh, Rob Falco led off the inning with a walk. After stealing second, he advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and later scored on a passed ball to give MC a 3-2 lead. FSU was unable to muster any offense in the bottom of the seventh as the game came to a close.
Crystal tossed all seven innings for Frostburg State allowing three runs on four hits while suffering his third loss of the season.
FSU returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Mt. Aloysius for an AMCC doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
