PAINESVILLE, OH —
Frostburg State pounded out 36 hits, including 10 doubles and eight home runs, in a 20-0 and 29-2 doubleheader sweep of host Lake Erie in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action Thursday at Storm Stadium. The Bobcats extended their winning streak to a season-high six games.
In the opener, junior Tim Wilkins (Baltimore, Md./Mervo) went 3-for-4 with two home runs, six RBIs and four runs scored to lead a 17-hit attack.
The Bobcats (12-8, 6-2 AMCC) took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run blast by Wilkins, and blew things open with an eight-run third.
Wilkins and junior Mark Teson (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) each hit three-run blasts in the inning, and junior Jake Mannon (Southampton, N.Y./Lenape) added a solo shot.
Freshman Mike Porta (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) hit his first career homer, a two-run blast in the seventh, to cap the scoring.
Junior Juan Aznar (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty (Frederick CC)) was stellar on the mound, scattering five hits and striking out a career-high 10 batters for his first complete-game shutout as a Bobcat. He improved to 2-0 on the season.
Teson and junior Jason Bramble (Chestertown, Md./King County (Chesapeake CC)) each collected two hits, three RBIs and scored twice.
In the nightcap, the Bobcats scored 10 runs in each of the first two innings and went on to tie the school single-game record of 29 runs originally set in a 29-0 win over Bowie State in 1967.
FSU's first-inning outburst was highlighted by a two-run home run by senior Chris Hammond (Brookville, Md./Sherwood (Montgomery-Germantown)) a two-run single by junior Bobby Farmer (Rockville, Md./Wheaton (Montgomery-Germantown)) and a three-run triple by Teson.
The Bobcats scored another 10 runs in the second despite getting only two hits. FSU benifitted from five walks, three errors, a passed ball and a balk.
Freshman Luke Tate (Germantown, Md./St. John's) laced a two-run single as part of a three-run fourth, and Bramble hit his first career homer, a two-run shot, to spark a three-run sixth.
Sophomore Matt Lord (Rockville, Md./Rockville) added his first collegiate home run, a three-run blast in the seventh, to cap the scoring.
Freshman Kevin Franc (Mechanicsville, Md./Leonardtown) allowed one earned run on six hits in five innings for his first career win. He struck out five and walked one.
Six Bobcats had two hits in the second contest, while Teson drove in four runs and was one of 11 FSU players to score at least twice.
Frostburg State will visit Pitt-Greensburg in an AMCC doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
