FROSTBURG, Md. -
With a two-game sweep of Pitt-Greensburg on Saturday, the Frostburg State baseball team advanced to the final four of the 2007 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament scheduled for this coming weekend, May 11-13.
The No. 3 seeded Bobcats, victorious over UPG 4-3 (8 inn.) and 13-8 in the first round, will take on No. 2 seeded Medaille in the opening game of the double-elimination portion of the tournament on Friday at 9:00 am. This year’s tournament is hosted by top-seeded La Roche (23-15, 13-5).
FSU (27-13, 13-5) along with MED (14-19, 13-5) and LAR all finished in a three-way tie for first place during the regular season, but La Roche earned the top seed due to tie breaker criteria. This is the third-straight season that Frostburg State has won or tied for the AMCC regular-season title.
The Bobcats and the Mavericks split their regular-season series. FSU won the opener 13-2 but lost in the nightcap 6-4. FSU is scheduled to play No. 23 ranked Washington & Jefferson on Tuesday of this week before traveling to Pittsburgh for the final four.
In the second game of the championship, La Roche will square off against No. 5 seeded Pitt-Bradford at noon. UPB (22-12, 10-8) advanced to the finals after upsetting No. 4 Penn State Behrend, 9-0 & 4-2 (10 inn.), on Saturday.
In the third game on Friday, the losers from the first two contests will play to determine the first team to be eliminated.
