FROSTBURG, MD —
Frostburg State split an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader with Pitt-Greensburg Friday afternoon, dropping the first game 8-2 before rebounding with a 10-0 blowout in the nightcap.
Frostburg State is now 20-16 overall and 4-6 in the AMCC, while Pitt-Greensburg is 10-20 overall and 4-6 in the league.
FSU needs to win both games of its doubleheader at Lake Erie tomorrow to clinch the fourth and final seed in the AMCC Tournament to be held next weekend in Bradford, Pa.
In the opener, Pitt-Greensburg scored seven runs in the fifth to blow open a 1-1 game. UPG took advantage of two errors, a hit batter, two passed balls and two wild pitches to plate five unearned runs in the inning.
UPG struck in the bottom of the first when Rich Means was hit by a pitch and later scored on a double by Jim Reed.
FSU, which has won at least 20 games each of the last four years, tied the game in the fourth on a ground out by senior Ryan Hamerski (Olney, Md./Sherwood) and added its second run in the sixth as senior Sean Davis (Olney, Md./Sherwood) doubled and scored on a single by senior Justin Wilt (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick).
Steve D'Uva scattered six hits and allowed two runs to earn the complete-game win. He struck out five and walked one to improve to 4-3.
Sophomore Mike Tiller (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) went 4 1/3 innings and allowed five runs - three earned - on five hits. He is now 2-2 on the year.
In the nightcap, FSU banged out 12 hits and senior Brent Lutz (Toms Brook, Va./Central) allowed just two hits over six innings en route to the 10-0 blanking.
FSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first as Davis singled with one out, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and came home on a squeeze bunt by Hamerski.
FSU opened a 4-0 lead in the third on a solo home run to center by Davis and a two-run blast to left by junior Chris Baugher (Frederick, Md./Brunswick).
FSU then blew the game open with a six-run fourth. Senior Kevin Romanik (Millville, N.J./Millville) laced a two-run double down the left field line and scored on a double by sophomore Kyle Mahan (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac). FSU added four more runs on three UPG errors.
Lutz retired the first five batters he faced before Dustin Mills reached on an error. Lutz promptly picked off Mills to end the second. Lutz allowed back-to-back singles with two out in the third but used another pickoff move to catch UPG.
Lutz struck out seven and walked two to improve to 5-2 on the year. Sophomore Jimmy Hardy (Myersville, Md./Middletown) struck out two of the three batters he faced in the seventh to complete the shutout.
Junior Lance Williams (Fairfax, Va./Woodson) went 4-for-4 with three doubles, while Davis was 2-for-3 with three runs.
