Baseball Splits Doubleheader With La Roche
04/07/2004

FROSTBURG, MD - The Frostburg State baseball team split an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader with La Roche College dropping the first game 3-1, but rallying late to win the second game 6-4.

In the first inning, the Bobcats (15-11, 3-3) used a bunt single, a stolen base and a wild pitch to get sophomore Kyle Mahan (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) to third base where he was driven in by senior Ryan Hamerski (Olney, Md./Sherwood) on a two-out single for an early 1-0 lead.

In the top of the second, the Redhawks (11-10, 3-3) answered with a two-out two-run double by Kevin Dick to take a slim 2-1 advantage. La Roche added another run in the fourth inning as Dick led off with a single and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick Wendell.

Trailing 3-1 led in the sixth, Bobcat starter senior Dan Sidorowicz (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) was replaced by junior Andrew Byer (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) , who kept the game close as he went one and two-thirds innings not allowing a runner, striking out one.

Sidorowicz went five and one third innings allowing three runs on only six hits. He walked three and struck out two in the loss, dropping his overall record to 3-2.

In the bottom of the seventh the Bobcats mounted a comeback as they loaded the bases on three walks with two-outs, but Ruben DeLeon came in to get the last out securing the win for the Redhawks.

The combined pitching performance by Paul Koniski, Varinder Gill and DeLeon dominated the Bobcat lineup giving up only the first inning run. Koniski pitched four and two-thirds innings allowing one run on six hits, while striking out three.

Gill pitched two innings allowing only one hit, but walked the bases loaded in the seventh. He turned the ball over to DeLeon who earned his first save of the season.

In the second game the Bobcats took advantage of a slow start by the Redhawks pitching staff as starter Joe Malloy walked the bases loaded recording only one out and throwing only two strikes against the four batters he faced. The only out he recorded was on a sacrifice bunt by Davis.

Replacing Malloy was Jeff Butterworth who came in an shutdown any thoughts of a big inning striking out one and getting an inning ending groundball to keep the Bobcats scoreless.

In the fourth inning Lucas McCoy led off the inning as senior Rob DeSanto (Rockville, Md./Wheaton) hit him with a pitch and advanced all the way to third on a throwing error by DeSanto on an attempted pick-off.

La Roche then added three more runs on an RBI-single by Damien Harkins knocking DeSanto out of the game as sophomore Jon Philipp (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) came in. Two walks, a hit batter and a error led to the three runs.

Trailing 4-0 the Bobcats got one back in the fourth as Jones doubled to right center driving in senior Kevin Romanik (Millville, N.J./Millville) and in the fifth a sacrifice fly by Hamerski cut the lead in half.

In the bottom of the sixth the Bobcats finally got a big inning as they took the lead 6-4 scoring four times on three walks and three singles. The key hit came from Davis who singled home freshman Mike Gitzen (Potomac Falls, Va./Potomac Falls) and advanced Mahan to third. Mahan then scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Chris Baugher (Frederick, Md./Brunswick) .

On the afternoon, Mahan went 5-5 with two walks, three runs scored and a stolen base. On the mound, Andrew Byer got credit for the win and senior Chris McGarvey (Fallentimber, Pa./Glendale) came in and closed the door in the seventh earning his second save of the season.

The Bobcats will return to action this Saturday, April 10 as they will host Villa Julie in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
