FROSTBURG, Md. -
The Frostburg State baseball team split with Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference foe Lake Erie, Saturday afternoon at Bob Wells Field.
FSU (18-10, 9-3 AMCC) used three solo homeruns, including the game winner in the bottom of the eighth, to rally for a 3-2 win. LEC (10-19, 4-8 AMCC) used a four-run fourth inning to outpace the hosts to a 6-3 win in the nightcap.
In the first inning, senior Chris Jones (Baltimore, Md./Towson) led off the game for the Bobcats with a solo homerun to left field. FSU held that 1-0 lead until the fifth, when LEC tied the game with an RBI fielder’s choice.
In the seventh, Lake Erie took a 2-1 lead when Anthony Beckham singled home Steven Walczak. In the bottom of the inning, sophomore Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) smashed a two-out homer to left center, tying the game at 2-2. The next batter, classmate Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford), hit a double off the top of the left field fence, but he would be stranded as the game headed into extra innings.
After the Storm failed to get anything going in the top of the eighth, Bobcat sophomore Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) hit a two-out solo bomb over the center field fence as Frostburg State captured the win, 3-2.
Sophomore reliever John Micklus (La Plata, Md./McDonough) earned his fourth win of the season, pitching 1.1 innings while keeping LEC hitless. Senior starter Billye Hollister (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) didn’t factor in the decision after tossing 6.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out seven.
In game two, Frostburg State opened a 2-0 lead in the first. Jones led off the game with a single and eventually scored on a Speights ground out. Two batters later, sophomore Joe Daddura (Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) singled home senior Kyle Mahan (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac).
Lake Erie answered in the third inning when Dawson Knight scored on a single by Terry Bailey. In the next inning, the Storm took a 5-2 lead after scoring four runs. Bill Sweet had a two-run double while Bob White and Knight each recorded RBI singles. LEC added to its lead in the seventh, when Knight scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 6-2.
Jones scored for FSU in the bottom of the seventh to narrow the gap to 6-3.
Sophomore Jordan Crystal (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst (Monmouth)) suffered the loss tossing 7.0 innings allowing six runs on eight hits while fanning six.
FSU returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Penn State Altoona for a doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
